THINKING OF STUDYING GOLF?

The golf industry has grown quickly during the past 15 years, with new golf complexes opening every year. Many of these new complexes include driving ranges, hotels and other leisure facilities. This change from golf-only facilities has provided more opportunities to turn a golfing hobby into a career.

Only the elite players will become tour professionals or club professionals. However, there are growing opportunities in the new golf complexes, in the retail and golf equipment manufacture sectors, and in a variety of other areas associated with golf.

There are several colleges and universities throughout the country offering a range of courses that will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to follow a career in the golf industry.

CHOOSING YOUR COURSE

It’s important to consider what’s best for you.

Do you want to follow a very academic course and study for a degree? If so, you will almost certainly follow the route of A levels to get to university.

However, if you want a more practical, skills focussed course, then it may be better to follow National Vocational Qualifications and/or the National Certificate or Diploma courses.

A Modern Apprenticeship or National Traineeship will give you the opportunity to train and gain qualifications for certain golfing careers. With this route you will be earning a wage, and will attend college for part of the week to study for qualifications.

If you do decide on a college or university course, you may have further choices to make. Which college or university is right for you?

You will need to look carefully at:

  • what the course covers and
  • what opportunities you will have to continue playing golf.
  • Consider whether you want to:
  • Stay close at home or
  • Move away from home to study.
  • Look carefully at all the options available.

GO AND VISIT THE COLLEGES AND FIND OUT ABOUT THE COURSES THEY OFFER.

Most of the colleges have Open Days, or even residential weekends when you can sample life at college and find out first-hand what the course you are considering is all about.
