David Stirk
Golf Sales Manager
Nike UK
What
my job involves:
I have worked for Nike since 1987, firstly as a Regional Sales Representative
for the footwear business and within the last couple of years I moved
into the Nike Golf Division.
My job involves looking after major retail accounts within the Nike Golf
Division. This role involves weekly calls to monitor sales, book in deliveries,
discuss marketing opportunities and resolve any issues. I am always in
daily contact with my accounts, either in person or on the phone.
I am involved with forecasting our fiscal year's sales by category and
by regional representative and providing market information on both Nike
and our competitors.
I am also responsible for a team of Regional Sales Representatives within
the Nike Golf Division, therefore I often accompany them on field visits
and through coaching assess their strengths and areas of development.
Helping them with any training needs they may have.
I formulate quarterly sales meetings with the Representatives to provide
regular updates on the business and direction for the golf team going
forward.
If you want my job:
Any person interested in working for Nike within the Golf Division, would
have to have a passion for golf, a strong knowledge of the game and a
thick skin! Furthermore you would need some relevant work experience gained
from an external sales role and a sound understanding of Sports Retail
environment.
The ability to play golf to a reasonably high standard is also quite important
from a credibility point of view.
Best
part of the job:
Is that I get to work in a sport that I am passionate about and that is
my main hobby outside of work (apart from my kids) and occasionally I
get the chance to play on some very good golf courses.
Worst
part of the job:
Is the travel and the fact that Nike does business very differently to
the rest of the golf trade, which quite often brings some interesting
challenges.
Favourite Golfer:
Is definitely Tiger Woods. Not purely because he is a Nike Golfer, but
more the way he plays the game and attacks all the time. He is definitely
the most exciting player since Severiano Ballesteros came on the scene
25 years ago.
