THE
TOURNAMENT DIARY
Junior Competitions & Opens 2007
At rookiegolf we get lots of inquiries from junior golfers and parents
about Junior Competitions and Tournaments that you can enter. Every
season there are hundreds of Junior Events staged across the country
– Club competitions, league matches, county competitions, schools’
golf matches, and national tournaments.
Some of these are individual events and others are team events.
Many of them are open to anyone to enter – although there may be
age and handicap restrictions.
We know from all your emails and messages that many of you don’t
know where to get information about the various events or how to
find out which events you can enter. We also know that there are
a lot of very good junior golfers out there with low handicaps who
are keen to find out how they might get a chance to play at county
level and hopefully go on to represent their country.
Over the winter we’ll be bringing you information to help you find
out more about the various Junior Events and Tournaments that you
can take part in, and the people who can help you.
Club Junior Organisers.
Most golf clubs have a Junior Organiser who will assist with junior
league matches against other clubs, and help with junior competitions
within his or her home club. Junior Organisers (or Junior Convenors
as they are known in Scotland) are usually volunteers – people who
give up their valuable time to support and help junior golfers.
Often the Junior Organiser is someone who does this for a number
of years at the club, but, in some cases the person changes every
year. One of the ways in which a Junior Organiser will help boys
and girls to progress is encouraging them to play in County Competitions.
This is the first stage of getting recognised by the County. The
club’s professional if he is keen on encouraging juniors will help
with the Junior Organiser as they will have played junior golf in
their amateur days.
Your first step is to talk with your Junior Organiser and enter
as many of your home club competitions as you can, also competitions
and events against other clubs and then to play in county events.
County Junior Organisers.
Every County has a Junior Organiser and his address can be found
in the English Golf Union Handbook. A copy of this handbook should
be in every golf club. If you are unable to find the address or
telephone number just ask your Junior Club Organiser or your Club
Secretary. The County Junior Organiser should be able to help you
with information about the various junior National Competitions
or Championships. His or her role is to keep a record of every up
and coming player in the County.
We’ll bring you more information soon about events in Scotland,
Ireland and Wales. Also, about how girls are selected to play for
their county and country.
We’ll add information about the dates of national tournaments and
events for juniors as soon as these are available.
